A small spreading coastal palm tree to 20 metres with many prop roots. Long 1 metre leaves are drooping and tapering. They are spirally arranged with many spines. The leaves can be woven.
Fruits are on female trees and are very large (resembling a pineapple). They are bright yellow/orange maturing in winter/spring, and they are edible.
