Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus)

A medium to large tropical or temperate rainforest tree (to 35 metres) along riverbanks in NSW and QLD. The bark is brown and fissured.

Leaves are glossy, stiff, narrow, oblong to linear, <2cm wide and up to 17cm long and sharp pointed.

There are male and female flowers on different trees and females plants only fruit in spring.

The fruit is really the enlarged stalk and the round seed sits outside and on top of the fruit. They are blue-black or purple berries, and are edible. The fruit are grape-sized, fleshy with dark, juicy sweet pulp. (plum-like 2-5cm).

Attracts birds, bats, and butterflies.

It is a popular and valuable cabinet timber.
